The Geophysical Society of Oklahoma city (GSOC) was chartered as the 6th chapter of the Society of Exploration Geophysicist (SEG) in October, 1952. This chapter was largely working geophysicists from Central and Western Oklahoma, with Richard M. Davies elected as first president. By 1970, we had grown to nearly 120 members. On June 4th 1971 we dedicated a granite monument, marking the site of the 1st reflection seismic survey conducted in the USA. Fifty years earlier, a crew of scientists recorded the first seismic data approximately ½ mile west of Penn Square Mall of today. This 1921 crew was led by Dr. John C. Karcher from the University of Oklahoma to image an area where oil seeps were noted along Belle Isle Creek. The Monument can be seen today in the front lawn of Belle Isle Library on the NW Expressway at N. Villa Ave.
Today the GSOC membership is nearly 300 and our monthly meetings are held regularly from September through May.
